Online RTO Exam Mock Test Web App with Question Bank and Regional Language Support

This project builds a web app that recreates the RTO Learner's Licence computer test: 15 random questions, a 15-minute countdown with auto-submit, a question palette, instant pass/fail scoring, and a review mode where every question carries a plain-language explanation of the rule behind it. The whole interface runs in English or Hindi/Marathi behind a one-tap toggle, like real RTO terminals. Ships with a curated question bank (design target: 500+ questions across 14 RTO categories). Suitable for B.E./B.Tech final-year projects in Computer Science, IT and Web Development.

The problem

Thousands of applicants sit the RTO Learner's Licence computer test every week, and many first-time failures come not from ignorance of the rules but from the format itself: fifteen questions, a ticking clock, and a computer terminal the applicant has never practised on. Preparation material is scattered across PDFs and forwarded images — nothing recreates the timed test, and nothing tells the applicant which categories they keep getting wrong. This project closes that gap with a web app that behaves like the real exam terminal. A curated question bank covers traffic signs, rules and regulations, road safety and driving practice, and every question carries a plain-language explanation of the rule behind it. The mock-test engine draws fifteen questions at random, runs a fifteen-minute countdown with auto-submit, and scores the attempt instantly against an 11-of-15 pass rule. A review mode then walks through each answer, turning mistakes into teaching moments. Because real RTO terminals offer regional languages, the entire app — interface, questions and explanations — ships in English and Hindi/Marathi behind a one-tap toggle.

Follow the working sequence

How it works

  1. Questions are authored as structured data entries: question text, four options, the correct-answer index, the category, and a plain-language explanation — written in English and translated into the regional language.
  2. Clicking Start draws 15 questions at random from the bank and begins the 15-minute countdown on the sidebar.
  3. Each option selection is saved to the answer map instantly; the palette and progress bar re-render from that map.
  4. Previous/Next buttons and palette cells move between questions freely — saved answers are restored when you return.
  5. When the timer reaches zero the interval forces submission; scoring compares the answer map against the stored correct indexes.
  6. The results view renders the score ring, the pass/fail verdict against the 11-of-15 rule, the percentage and the time used.
  7. The review list is generated from the same answer map, so every row shows your answer, the correct answer and the explanation.
  8. The language toggle re-renders every label, question, option and explanation through a language resolver — adding another language is a data change, not a code change.

Tech stack:

  • HTML5, CSS3, vanilla JavaScript (ES6) — no framework dependency
  • Single-page application structure with three views (Home, Mock Test, Question Bank)
  • In-page state store (shuffled order, answer map, timer, active language)
  • Structured JSON/JavaScript question-bank schema with bilingual fields
  • Static hosting (GitHub Pages, Netlify or Vercel) for the deployed build
Parameter Value
Questions per test 15, drawn at random (design target, matching the real RTO format)
Time limit 15 minutes per attempt, auto-submit at zero (design target)
Pass rule 11 correct out of 15 (design target for the demo)
Question bank 500+ curated questions across 14 RTO categories (design target for the built-to-order bank; the demo carries 30 fully written sample questions)
Languages English + Hindi/Marathi in the full build (design target); one-tap toggle
Explanations Every question carries a plain-language rule explanation
Delivery Single-file HTML/CSS/JS demo; full build as a static web app
Browser support Any modern browser, desktop and mobile (expected)
Backend None required — no server or database (expected)

Project features

  • [Timed mock-test engine] 15 questions drawn at random, a 15-minute countdown with auto-submit at zero, and Previous/Next navigation — a faithful replica of the RTO terminal's behaviour.
  • [Question palette with auto-save] A 15-cell palette shows answered and current questions at a glance; every selection is saved instantly, so jumping between questions never loses an answer.
  • [Instant scoring with pass/fail] Attempts are scored against an 11-correct-out-of-15 pass rule, with a score ring, percentage and time-used summary shown the moment the test ends.
  • [Answer review mode] An expandable review list shows your answer, the correct answer and the rule explanation for every question attempted — the study loop the demo is built around.
  • [Regional language toggle] The entire interface, all questions, options and explanations render in English or Hindi/Marathi at one tap, matching the language choice on real RTO terminals.
  • [Categorised question bank browser] Questions are filterable by Traffic Signs, Rules & Regulations, Road Safety and Driving Practice, each with its explanation visible inline.
  • [Single-file delivery] The demo runs from one HTML file with no build step, no backend and no database — it works offline once downloaded.

What is included

  • Working RTO mock-test web app (the demo, extended to the full build)
  • Question bank source file: 30 fully written sample questions in the demo; 500+ questions across 14 categories in English + Hindi/Marathi as the design target for the order
  • Project report PDF (background, architecture, timer and state design, bilingual content pipeline)
  • PPT presentation for final review
  • Viva Q&A preparation document (SPA state management, countdown timers, i18n approach, content schema)
  • Static-hosting deployment guide

Limitations & prerequisites

  • The 11-of-15 pass rule and 15-minute format are design targets modelling the real exam; the official RTO pattern can vary by state, so the buyer should confirm the current local format.
  • The demo ships 30 sample questions; the 500+ bank is authored fresh for each order and the student should review it for correctness before any exam-season claims.
  • Explanations are study aids written from standard traffic rules — they are not legal advice and do not replace the official Motor Vehicles Act text.
  • The single-file demo has no user accounts or attempt history; progress analytics and weak-category tracking are future scope.
  • Picture-based traffic-sign questions are not in the demo; the built-to-order bank can include a sign-image set.
  • The app works offline once downloaded, but the hosted demo needs a static host; no backend or database is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it really behave like the RTO computer test?

It models the format: 15 random questions, a 15-minute countdown, auto-submit at zero, a question palette and instant scoring. The 11-of-15 pass rule is the demo's design target, chosen to mirror the real test's difficulty.

Which languages does it support?

The demo runs fully in English and Hindi, including every question, option and explanation. The built-to-order version adds Marathi, and the architecture makes further languages a data change rather than a code change.

Can I add my own questions?

Yes — the bank is a structured data file, so new questions are added by appending entries. An admin editing panel can be built as an extension if the order needs it.

Does it need a server or a database?

No. It is a static single-file app that runs offline once downloaded and deploys to any static host. User accounts and attempt history would need a backend, listed as future scope.

Is this project suitable for a final-year project?

Yes — for Computer Science, IT and Web Development programs. It demonstrates SPA state management, countdown-timer logic, bilingual UI architecture, content-schema design and a complete test-engine workflow, all in a genuinely useful product.
