Alumni Mentorship Portal Web App with Profile Matching and Slot Booking

This project builds a web portal where final-year students discover alumni mentors, get ranked mentor recommendations through transparent rule-based profile matching, and book 30-minute mentorship slots from a live weekly calendar. It includes a mentor directory with search and domain filters, a matching engine that explains every score, and a booking flow with confirmation and a "My sessions" dashboard. The stack is React on the frontend, a Node.js/Express REST API and MySQL, with JWT authentication for student, mentor and admin roles. Suitable for B.E./B.Tech final-year projects in Computer

The problem

Most colleges run alumni mentorship informally — over WhatsApp groups, scattered spreadsheets and word of mouth. Students struggle to find the right senior for their specific goal, alumni have no structured way to offer time, and there is no record of who met whom or what was discussed. The result is that mentorship happens for a lucky few while most students never get a single structured conversation with an alumnus. This project replaces that chaos with a proper web portal: a searchable mentor directory, a profile-matching engine that ranks mentors against a student's skills and goals with fully explainable scores, and a slot-booking calendar where students reserve 30-minute sessions and track them in one dashboard. It demonstrates the complete lifecycle of a real multi-role web application — authentication, role-based access, relational data modelling, REST API design and booking-state logic.

How it works

  1. Students sign up and log in (JWT-authenticated); mentors register and an admin verifies their alumni profile before it goes live in the directory.
  2. Mentors publish their weekly availability as 30-minute slots, stored against their profile in the MySQL database.
  3. Students browse the directory, search by keyword or filter by domain, and open any mentor's full profile.
  4. In the matching view, a student selects their skills and goal; the backend scores every mentor with the published rule weights and returns the ranked top 5 with reasons.
  5. The student picks a mentor and day on the booking calendar; free slots are shown, booked ones are locked, and a confirmation dialog finalizes the reservation.
  6. The booking is written to the bookings table and appears in the student's "My sessions" dashboard with a CONFIRMED status.
  7. A calendar invite and meeting link are emailed to both parties after confirmation (requires the buyer's SMTP credentials).

Project features

  • [Mentor directory with search & filters] Browse verified alumni profiles with keyword search across name, company, role and skills, plus domain filter chips (Software, Data & AI, Product, Design, Core) — exactly like a production people directory.
  • [Rule-based profile matching] Students pick the skills they are building and their goal; the engine ranks mentors with a transparent score (60% shared skills, 25% domain alignment, 15% goal fit) and lists the reason for every rank. No black-box model — every score is explainable in a viva.
  • [Slot booking calendar] Mentors publish weekly availability; students pick a day and grab a free 30-minute slot. Booked slots lock immediately so double-booking is impossible, with week navigation up to 4 weeks ahead.
  • [Booking confirmation flow] A confirmation dialog shows mentor, date, time and session length before a slot is reserved; confirmed bookings appear instantly in the student's "My sessions" list.
  • [My sessions dashboard] All upcoming mentorship calls in one place with mentor name, scheduled time and CONFIRMED status — the student's personal record of the mentorship journey.
  • [Mentor profile view] One-click profile cards showing role, company, batch, experience, skills, session count and rating, with a direct "Book slot" action from the profile.
  • [Three role-based logins] Student, mentor and admin roles with JWT authentication — mentors manage their own availability, admins verify mentor profiles and oversee bookings.

What is included

  • Complete portal source code (React frontend + Node.js/Express backend)
  • MySQL database schema with seed data (sample mentor profiles, skills, slots)
  • REST API documentation (endpoints, request/response formats)
  • JWT authentication for all three roles
  • Working single-file interactive demo of the portal (directory, matching, booking)
  • Project report PDF (background, system design, ER diagram, methodology)
  • PPT presentation for final review
  • Viva Q&A preparation document (REST APIs, JWT, matching logic, database design)

Limitations & prerequisites

  • Mentorship calls run over an external meeting link (Google Meet/Zoom) — in-app video calling is not part of the base build.
  • Matching is rule-based, not an ML model — scores are transparent but the engine does not learn from past bookings.
  • Calendar invites and emails need the buyer's own valid SMTP credentials and internet connectivity.
  • The base build covers free 30-minute slots — paid-session billing or payment gateway integration is not included.
  • Design target of ~50 concurrent users is an estimate; formal load testing beyond that is the buyer's responsibility.
  • Mentor data in the demo is illustrative — real deployment needs the college's actual alumni records.

Delivery & timeline

  • Standard build time is approximately 10–14 days from order confirmation, including the demo walkthrough, report and PPT. Custom modules (admin analytics, email reminders, mobile app) extend this by 3–7 days each depending on scope.

Support & explanation

  • Includes a live walkthrough of the codebase, help deploying to the buyer's hosting, and explanation of every module for viva preparation. Post-delivery doubt-clearing is available over WhatsApp during the project review period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this project suitable for a final-year project?

Yes — for Computer Science, IT and Web Development programs. It demonstrates full-stack development, REST API design, JWT authentication, relational database modelling with an ER diagram, and a real booking-state workflow with concurrency-safe slot locking. Every one of these is standard viva territory, and the transparent matching engine gives the student something genuinely explainable to defend.

Does the matching use an AI/ML model?

No, and that is deliberate and honest. Matching is rule-based: shared skills, domain alignment and goal fit are combined with published weights, so every score can be explained line by line — which examiners value more than an opaque model.

Is the database included, and can the portal be hosted online?

Yes. The complete MySQL schema with sample seed data — mentor profiles, skills, availability slots and bookings — ships with the project, and the application deploys to any standard Node.js + MySQL hosting. The buyer arranges their own hosting account and domain name; step-by-step deployment guidance, including environment configuration and database import, is included with the delivery.

Can more modules or roles be added?

Yes — the codebase is modular, so additions are straightforward. Common requests are an admin analytics dashboard showing booking trends, email or SMS reminders before sessions, a mentor rating and review system, and paid-session billing through a payment gateway. Each addition is scoped and quoted separately, with its own delivery timeline added to the base 10–14 days.

What will I receive with the project?

The complete source code (React frontend and Node.js/Express backend), the MySQL schema with sample seed data, full REST API documentation, and a working interactive demo of the portal covering the directory, matching and booking views. Documentation includes the project report PDF, a review PPT and a viva Q&A document covering REST APIs, JWT, the matching logic and database design. Suitable for B.E./B.Tech final-year projects in Computer Science, IT and Web Development.
