Online Sports Tournament Bracket Manager Web App with Fixtures and Live Scores

This project builds an online sports tournament bracket manager web app that auto-generates single-elimination, double-elimination and round-robin brackets from a team list, schedules fixtures with dates and venues, and tracks live scores. Scorers enter runs/wickets/overs or goals per match; winners advance automatically, losers feed the losers bracket, and points tables apply net run rate or goal-difference tiebreakers. A read-only public view keeps players and spectators updated. Suitable for B.E./B.Tech final-year projects in Computer Science, IT and Web Development.

The problem

College sports fests and local tournaments are still run on paper brackets taped to walls and fixture lists maintained in notebooks. When a score is disputed or a fixture is rescheduled, the bracket has to be redrawn by hand, points tables are recalculated on calculators, and players crowd around the organizer for updates. Errors creep in — a team wrongly placed in the next round, a miscalculated net run rate — and arguments follow. This project replaces that entire manual loop with a web app: the organizer enters the teams once, the app generates the bracket, schedules every fixture with date and venue, and then score entry drives everything — winners advance automatically, losers drop into the losers bracket in double elimination, and points tables with proper tiebreakers stay current without a single manual calculation. A public read-only view means players and spectators follow the tournament live from their phones instead of queuing at the notice board.

The organizer creates the tournament and scorers enter match scores in the web app.

How it works

  1. The organizer creates a tournament with its name, sport, format, team list, venues and schedule window.
  2. The bracket engine seeds the teams, assigns first-round byes where the count is not a power of two, and generates every round with winner and loser feed paths.
  3. Fixtures are listed with dates and venues; scorers open any match and enter runs/wickets/overs (cricket) or goals (football), or mark it live while play continues.
  4. Saving a final score computes the winner — with a recorded tiebreak pick if a knockout match ends level — and advances the winner automatically; in double elimination the loser drops into the losers bracket.
  5. Round-robin results flow into the points table: points from wins and draws, then net run rate or goal difference as the configured tiebreaker.
  6. Each saved score broadcasts over WebSocket, so the public bracket, fixtures and standings refresh instantly on every spectator's screen.
  7. When the final completes, the champion is locked and the tournament archive keeps the full bracket, every scorecard and the final table.

Project features

  • [Tournament setup wizard] Create a tournament in minutes: name, sport, format (single elimination, double elimination or round robin), team list, venues and schedule window — everything the engine needs to build the draw.
  • [Automatic bracket generation] Teams are seeded into the draw, byes are assigned automatically when the count is not a power of two, and every round is generated with correct winner/loser feed paths.
  • [Fixture scheduling] Every match gets a date, time and venue; the full fixture list renders as a filterable schedule that updates itself as results come in.
  • [Live score entry with winner progression] Scorers enter runs/wickets/overs for cricket or goals for football; saving a final score computes the winner and advances them to the next round instantly, with an in-progress "live" state for ongoing matches.
  • [Points tables with tiebreakers] Round-robin standings compute automatically — points from wins and draws, then net run rate for cricket or goal difference for football as the tiebreaker, exactly as real leagues do it.
  • [Public shareable view] A read-only link shows the live bracket, fixtures and standings to players and spectators; score updates broadcast over WebSocket the moment they are saved.
  • [Configurable scoring rules] Points per win, draw handling and tiebreak order are adjustable per tournament through settings, so the same app serves a T20 cricket cup and a football league.
  • [Knockout tiebreak handling] Level scores in knockout matches are resolved through an explicit tiebreak-winner pick recorded on the match, so the bracket never stalls on a draw.

What is included

  • Complete web application source code (frontend + backend + database models)
  • Database schema and seed data for a demo cricket and football tournament
  • Setup and deployment guide (local run + online hosting steps)
  • Project report PDF (background, system design, bracket algorithms, testing)
  • PPT presentation for final review
  • Viva Q&A preparation document (tournament formats, seeding, tiebreak logic, WebSocket updates)

Limitations & prerequisites

  • Double elimination is generated for 4 or 8 teams in the base build; larger double-elimination draws are a customization.
  • Scores only appear when a scorer enters them — the app does not pull results from any external feed or detect them automatically.
  • The public view is read-only; there is no in-app chat, commenting or polling in the base build.
  • Cricket scoring covers limited-overs formats (runs, wickets, overs); ball-by-ball commentary is not included.
  • Changing scoring rules mid-tournament does not recompute already-saved matches automatically; affected matches must be re-saved.
  • Hosting, domain and any SMS or push-notification provider costs are separate from the software build.
  • The base build is a responsive web app; there is no native Android/iOS app (that is listed as a customization).

Frequently Asked Questions

How does automatic bracket generation work?

You enter the team names and pick a format. The engine seeds the teams into the draw using standard seeding order, assigns first-round byes automatically when the team count is not a power of two, and generates every round with the correct winner-advance and loser-drop paths. The bracket, fixtures and (for leagues) the full round-robin schedule are all produced from that one input.

How are ties and tiebreakers handled?

In round robin, level matches award shared points and the table breaks ties by net run rate for cricket or goal difference for football, exactly like professional leagues. Knockout matches cannot end level, so a tied score requires the scorer to record the tiebreak winner on the match before the bracket advances anyone.

Does it support double elimination?

Yes. The base build generates double-elimination draws for 4 or 8 teams: losers from the winners bracket drop into the losers bracket automatically, and if the losers-bracket champion beats the winners-bracket champion in the grand final, a winner-takes-all decider is created. Larger double-elimination draws can be added as a customization.

Can it be hosted online, and does it need the internet?

Yes, it is built to be hosted: the React frontend deploys to any static host or CDN and the Node.js API with MongoDB runs on any Node-compatible server. An internet connection is required to use it — live score broadcasts, the public view and multi-scorer access all go through the hosted backend. Local-network demo instructions are included for viva-day presentation.

Can entry fees, payments or a mobile app be added?

Yes, as customizations. Entry-fee collection with a payment gateway, SMS or push notifications for fixture alerts, and a native mobile app are all feasible extensions on this codebase and are quoted separately. The base build covers the complete tournament-management workflow without them.

Is this project suitable for a final-year project?

Yes — for Computer Science, IT and Web Development programs. It demonstrates REST API design, database modeling for tournaments and fixtures, bracket-generation algorithms, real-time updates with WebSockets, role-based access and a complete hosted deployment, which together make a strong implementation and viva story.
